Jack N. Schaefers was born on April 10, 1931 in western Cincinnati. He was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in late Spring of 2008. He passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones, on June 30. He attempted chemotherapy for a short period of time prior to that, but ran out of energy after an intervening heart attack.

He leaves behind his high school sweetheart, and beloved wife of 11 years, Sue Reid Schaefers. Combined, they had 10 children, 32 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Background & Education

Jack entered Field Artillery Officers Training in the US Army in 1953. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant – Artillery in 1955. Following the Army, he graduated from St. Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH with a major in philosophy and completed his masters in social work in St. Louis, MO.

He married Mary V. Schmidt in 1957. They had 3 daughters: Susan (1958), Beth (1959), and Sarah (1960). Mary preceded him in death in 1972.

He married Sally Thornton in 1977, and adopted her two daughters: Tracy and Tricia. They remained married until 1991.

Throughout his life, Jack was known as a ‘rambling’ man. He tried his hand at many careers. He was a social worker, real estate broker, car salesman, truck driver, and auctioneer. He supplemented his full-time jobs by selling Amway, WorldBook, A L Williams, and Shaklee.

In later years, Jack became a gifted Karaokee singer and woodworker. He specialized in George Jones, Johnny Cash, bowl turning and composite works of art. He was a member of the Cincinnati Woodworkers Club www.cincinnatiwoodworkingclub.org, and the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild www.ovwg.org.

He was generous in sharing his knowledge of woodworking, and was willing to provide advice on almost any subject!
